Opened in 1991, the building was designed by Hammond Beeby Rupert Ainge, Inc. The exterior bottom portion is made of large granite blocks. Red brick makes up the majority of the exterior. These two portions look similar to the Beaux-Art style. The lower level houses the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium, while the upper floors contain the library and other resources. Since completion, the Library has appeared in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest public library building in the world. The Popular Library offers over 11,000 square feet of the newest books and a variety of formats.
